THIS WONDROUS SPHERE
This wondrous sphere
We circle it a few times
Its seas held by gravity
From spinning off into black nothingness.
An atmosphere protecting life
And a species evolved over billions of years
To the temple of the human brain
Able to conceive of seeming miracles
Through application of science and logic
A heart that pumps nutrients
Nerves that connect mind and body
Imagination to visualize possibilities
Social enough to mobilize many people
Use collections of minds
Consortiums of bodies
To accomplish dreams
And each of us an individual
Solitary enough to ponder a personal end
Emotional enough to feel pain and joy
To imagine a connection beyond this life
To modify greed and selfishness
To leave children, whole and joyful
To remember your smile and benevolence.
And then to the trail
To climb and descend
To gaze out at that blue sea
To use the mind’s eye
To see what is below the surface
An ocean full of life
If you have knowledge.
And a mind that uses its knowledge
