We could celebrate
The coming of the Lord
Since it often seems obvious
That he is here
Watching everything
Observing the magnificent co-operation
Between people and nations
Unlike the world wars of the 20th century
The nuclear sword of Damocles
Hangs over the neck
Of every nation
Forcing forms of conflict resolution
Brutal invasions like Russia into Ukraine
Are rare and limited though deadly
As economic war is restrained
By mutual profit and trade agreements
Peace through strength cliches abound
As the world has gotten comfortable
With the U.S. as the dominant superpower
Along with its history of non-occupation.
Europe, Africa conquered
Then turned back to native rule
Nazi countries became democracies
Embracing free trade
Here is the silent presence
Watching, observing
And somehow influencing
Such that in the shadow of destruction
21st century humans have endured
Practicing communication and negotiation
Rather than invasion.
As we continue to listen for that voice of peace.
