It's a circuitous route we take
That passes the mountain
Looking up at formidable castles
Then heading up the back side
Until cresting the ridgeline.
Traverse until facing west
With unobstructed views
To the south and north
At ridge/plateau/peak
Overlooking city, bridge, headland, bay
With shelter from the storms
And shade from the sun
With fields frequented by deer
And pines, oaks and bays dotting the hillside
Above it all
An ancient God
Observing us at our tasks.
Seeing our true selves-
Our pride and selfishness
Our search for love
And dedication to others
In the family unit and sometimes without
And then the walker
Who we see on his own-
Resolute in kindness
And in silence communicating deeply.
A caring for society-
Hope for our progeny,
Gratitude for small epiphanies
And a soft kiss
For my beloved
