LEARNING TO LEAD
They followed the herd
The animals provided food, shelter, survival
Ancestral elk head north
Wherever edible plants grow, they find them
And the two-footed homo sapiens trailed
But they had to hunt
They had to kill
Animals strong and swift and wary
And into northern Asia
And across the land bridge
During an ice age
And down the North American Continent
All the way to the bottom of South America
With tribes migrating everywhere
Each their own system
Of maintaining the group
And then thousands of years later
Europeans arrive
Sailing by the stars
Building great structures
Farming, transportation, manufacturing
Central governments
Large armed troops specialized combat
And drove the ancient people
Into reservations and social decay.
Yet, many integrated into society
Achieving success
And many still walk
Following the herd
Evoking ancestors of America
Always needing to hunt
Always following the herd
And learning to lead
