Essence of Youth
If I were to pick up where I left off
It would require such beauty
As would be so improbable
As to discredit its probability entirely.
A level of involvement ensued
Where every day the main objective
Was to make her happy -
To see contentment enter her eyes -
(with) her laugh of approval
And the gentle touch of pure femininity
As she recounted the past & future events
Of our children.
A place where the extravagant efforts
In the business world, could be suspended.
A place where the battery of the soul
Is patiently & completely recharged.
We walked the most beautiful trails
And danced in the opera house lobby
As if the essence of youth
Would never diminish.
Afternoon left us alone
Separated from the world -
Under the shade of redwoods
High atop the mountain
A plateau above the bay
And our lives in full bloom.
There are no ghosts.
There are angels.
They exist in our mind & imagination -
Able to be summoned
Under desperate circumstances
If approached with genuine compassion.
